The scheme predicts one prognostic moment (mass mixing ratio) for six hydrometeor classes, including graupel, which allows representation of mixed-phase precipitation processes at moderate computational cost.
It is commonly used in regional simulations when a balance between runtime and physically plausible precipitation structure is needed.
